Curing CO2-related climate change is a daunting challenge for even the most genius scientists but one group of inventors isn’t scared of trying.

According to TakePart.com, a team of scientists at the University of Illinois @Chicago say they have created a device that effectively removes CO2 from the atmosphere using sunlight to break down molecules into carbon monoxide and hydrogen. The carbon neutral process, which is referred to as synthesis gas or syngas,” creates usable liquid fuel that could power cars, airplanes, and other mechanisms.

The device was revealed as a part of a research study released in Science Magazine and the team of inventors plans to produce fuel at $2 per gallon. That production value could make drilling for oil and gas a thing of the past, removing future CO2 from being added to the atmosphere.

“The beauty of this work is it directly uses the energy of the sun. This doesn’t need any electricity or external energy.” – Mohammad Asadi (*Quote courtesy of TakePart.com)

So far the device is relatively small and needs to be scaled up in order to create commercial viability within the market. Mohammad Asadi, who works as the lead researcher, hopes to create an independent “solar park” that would serve as a carbon sink along with fixtures attached to power plants and other energy producers.
