- 1,596 pounds of trash left on the shores of Lake Tahoe
- 7,738 cigarette butts
- 330 Volunteers to clean it all up
The 4th of July is a rowdy holiday but no amount of rowdiness should amount to 1,596 lbs of trash left behind. Unfortunately, a bunch of litterbugs decided to trash Lake Tahoe over the holiday weekend and now volunteers are cleaning up the mess.

In the end, the League To Save Lake Tahoe (AKA Keep Tahoe Blue) cleaned up 9 favorite beach locations that tend to draw the biggest crowds. And while the amount of trash left behind is disheartening, the volunteer effort was anything but.
“We are grateful to every volunteer who made today’s cleanup possible. Also, without the deep involvement of our partners and sponsors, we would not have the ability to stage cleanups for so much of Lake Tahoe’s shoreline.” – Marilee Movius, Keep Tahoe Blue
In the future, League officials said they have a better understanding of where and how they can implement trash receptacles in the future to prevent so many cigarette butts and beer cans from ending up on the beach and in the lake.
