You heard that right– is predicting 90″ of snow to fall on Chamonix by Sunday. All 90 of those inches should be on the ground at an elevation of 8,000 feet (pretty much mid-mountain for the Aguille Du Midi and Grands Montets).

Bottomline, this looks like it will be the storm of the year to hit the alps!

Right now, it appears as though the powder party will commence Wednesday morning and last through Sunday afternoon.

Current models are forecasting Chamonix to receive over 36″ on Wednesday alone!

After Wednesday, another 19″ is expected on Thursday and another 26″ should follow on Friday before the storm starts making its way into central Switzerland and Austria (Look out Engleberg and Zillertal). The best part?– Snow levels are expected to linger around town level!

While many are claiming that this year is becoming an irregularly low snow year in the alps, the following storm should sway some of those opinions by Sunday. More importantly, all the new snow should tip the scales and open up a great deal of skiing in and around the Mont Blanc massif.

Before that happens, Cham locals are going to have to endure a period of extreme avalanche danger that will likely include some incidents in the coming weeks.
