While being on the “Government Ski Team” has been a running joke among ski bums for years, one Wyoming state representative is not laughing.
When discussing Medicaid expansion in the “Equity State,” Sen. Phil Nicholas cited the example of ski bums who work all summer just to ski in the winter and take advantage of government sponsored Medicaid plans reports the JH News and Guide. However, the amount of government sponsored skiers remains very low but that doesn’t mean the republican senator felt the example wasn’t fitting.
It seems as though the senator, who came under fire for alleged misuse of the state plane to fly to dinner and back in a single night, thinks that Medicaid expansion would be a waste of state funds.

In the JH News and Guide article, St. John’s Medical Center Chief Executive Lou Hochheiser claims that the senator doesn’t understand the fact that the vast majority of clients needing the Medicaid support are “people who have no options.”
However, that does not mean that ski bum patients on Medicaid do not exist.
Democratic representative, Andy Schwartz conceded that such an example is a possibility. However, he elaborated on that statement saying, “the possibility that a ski bum in Teton County takes advantage of [Medicaid] is not a reason to vote against [the bill].”
