Tragic news is coming out of Wanaka as the late season in New Zealand is coming to a close.
On Monday, two backcountry skiers headed beyond Treble Cone’s boundary where they encountered icy conditions. While skinning, one of the men’s skis lost purchase on the snow, which ultimately lead to a fall of approximately 500 meters according to The Southland Times.
Unable to self arrest, the man slid for a significant distance that ultimately lead to his death. Within minutes, his partner had contacted rescue officials who arrived on the scene shortly after. As of now the specific cause of death is unknown.
However, Senior Sergeant Allan Grindell said, “He travelled about 500m down the slope and while we don’t know what happened … he’s obviously sustained injuries that ended up causing his death.”
The man has been identified by police officials in Wanaka as 22 year-old Jeffrey Charles Atkinson of Colorado.
Our thoughts and prayers go out to Jeffrey’s family and friends.
