After a 5.9-magnitude earthquake struck Mt. Kinabalu last Friday, Malaysian officials have detained 2 Canadians, a Brit, and one Dutch person for indecent exposure. According to reports from NBC News, the move comes after the climbers took nude pictures near the summit of Mt. Kinabalu before the deadly earthquake hit. Their first court appearance and initial hearing came on Wednesday.Eleanor Hawkins was among a group of tourists who were blamed for causing a deadly earthquake by posing naked on Mount Kinabalu
The British lady has been identified as Eleanor Hawkins. Her father recently commented on the situation, telling NBC News, “She knows what she did was stupid and disrespectful and she is very sorry for the offense she has caused the Malaysian people.” The Canadian Department of Foreign Affairs has yet to release any information about their citizens being held in custody.
Malaysian officials claim the group of four knowingly disobeyed their guide by taking the nude pictures on what indigenous people believe is sacred ground. Local communities see the indecent act as the cause of the massive earthquake, which angered spirits inhabiting the mountain.
Currently, police officials are looking for the rest of the people featured in the nude photos and plan to take those involved into custody.
