It’s official, this season Tahoe received the least amount of snow since records started being kept. On average the Tahoe region would receive three times the amount of snowfall they got this season.

How bad was it? Well, in the month of January Squaw Valley recorded just 4 inches of snow and by mid-March Tahoe’s snowpack was completely gone!

A recent study published in the American Geophysical Union found that the current drought in California is the worst drought the area has seen in nearly 1,200 years. How do they know this? Researchers used tree ring data from Blue Oak trees that stretched back over one thousand years to reconstruct precipitation models that show how much snow fell each year.
