On Saturday, September 27, 2014 at around 11:53 AM Japan Standard Time (UTC +9),[6] Mount Ontake erupted. At least 40 people were injured, and another thirty-two are dead.  The JSDF began carrying out helicopter searches for missing people after the eruption. One woman was initially reported to have died from the eruption, and the police later reported that over 30 people have been found in “cardiac arrest” near the summit, a term used by Japanese emergency services for people without vital signs.

Mount Ontake, also referred to as Mount Kiso Ontake, is the second highest volcano in Japan at 3,067 m (10,062 ft).
