Unofficial is sad to report that the classic Freeride World Tour Crested Butte stop has been cancelled.  It was scheduled for March 11th-14th and has been cancelled due to ‘unusually low snowpack’.  We were looking forward to heading up and cheering on our friends as well as taking some video, but Unofficial Telluride is well aware of the rocky terrain and obviously the safety of competitors comes first.  Here is what the event director Bryan Barlow had to say: “It’s not worth jeopardizing the well-being of our athletes to hold the event this year. We try to work with Mother Nature the best we can and have already postponed this event in hopes of more snow. Year-to-year we need to maintain a certain level of consistency from event to event in terms of snowpack and what is needed for the skiers to showcase what is freeskiing today.”  It is a shame because we have significantly more snow down here in the San Juans than last year when they held the event up there, but the Butte must be extra crusty this season.  Any chance the FWT would move it down here even though Telski is married to Land Rover now?  The skiing is going off right now.  Full story here:
