Dutch Prince Johan Friso van Oranje

Dutch Prince Johan Friso van Oranje is still unconscious after his avalanche burial at the Austrian ski resort Lech last week.

Johan was buried for 20 minutes under avalanche debris causing oxygen deprivation.  Severe brain damage and an hour of cardiac arrest were the unfortunate consequences of that burial.

The picture does not look bright for the Prince.  It is currently unclear if he will ever regain consciousness.

Johan was skiing at Austria’s Lech ski resort off piste when the avalanche occurred last week.  He was wearing an avalanche transceiver.
Johan is the middle son of Queen Beatrix.  He gave up his right to the Dutch throne when he married a “commoner” in 2003.
