Yesterday (Jan. 15) the first stop of the North Face Park and Pipe Open Series (PPOS) was a successful pipe competition in Whistler. The pipe was huge and the day was cold, but the skies were clear and invites to the X Games were promised, so the competitors threw down. In the end Roz Groenewoud of Whistler won the women’s event and Gus Kenworthy of Telluride, CO, took home the men’s title.
This is an AFP Gold Level event, and the last event that the X Games athlete selection committee considered in allowing competitors to earn a spot in the X Games pipe competition. Since Kenworthy and Groenewoud already have spots at Winter X, Megan Gunning and Kris Atkinson, both from Calgary, Alberta, got the nod to show their stuff at the X Games in Aspen a few weeks from now.
The North Face Park and Pipe Open Series next invades Northstar Resort, California, on February 9-12, and then Waterville Valley, New Hampshire, on March 8-11, 2012.
Congrats Gus and Roz!
