Precision depth measurement

By Kyler Roush

December 13th, almost felt like winter. I am afraid that it is just a tease from Mother Nature though. It was a fun tease however. According to WasatchSnowForecast.com the next system that was due to arrive Thursday is going to split in two, which is an unfortunate re-accruing theme. They also believe our next “chance” is Dec. 22nd.

snowbird snow conditions  Looks almost like winter to me

For the next few days expect flat light with some flurries with day time temperatures in the 20’s. Winds look like they will be minimal as well. Other than these few flakes that we are expecting, we will remain dry through the rest of the week.

While taking a breather from the Pow turns, precision snow depth measurements were taken. At around noon about 6 inches of higher density snow had fallen. Snowbird reported 5 inches by the end of the day. Despite the difference, the forecast the night before had us at 50% chance of less than an inch.

All signs indicate the snow will be short lived and we will be back to moguls and groomers soon. I am going to be optimistic about this and tell myself this heavier snow will just help to cover the rocks that are still all too frequently abusing skis and boards. Until we get some real storms over Northern Utah continue to be very aware of what lies below.
