Getting tired and bonking out really sucks on a powder day. I have recently become a big fan of the Shot Bloks from Clif to avoid the previously mentioned negative effects of shredding hard. The makers of Clif Bars have now expanded into the chewy fruity energy market. Bloks are way more pleasant to scarf down than the gel packs that Clif and other manufactures sell. The texture and flavors are pretty damn good. I would recommend either the lime or orange varieties.  Another real benefit is the fact that Bloks do not freeze, so you can eat them ASAP when you need a boost. It it the worst when you pull out a Clif Bar and it is totally frozen.
