16143131_10154748424810325_9078760584306149174_nAn avalanche hit the main employee parking lot at Snowbird around 5:25pm, burying 3 to 4 cars belonging to resort guests. The lot is called the Superior Lot and is just east of the Cliff Lodge. Fox New 13 is reporting at least 25 ski patrollers were on scene searching for victims but have not yet found anyone injured or buried by the slide.

There is currently an inter-lodge restriction in effect and none of the resort patrons are allowed outside at this time. Guests who are in the lodges will be able to stay overnight and the restriction is expected to remain in place until tomorrow morning (interesting call to make to your boss about not coming in tomorrow). It is not known how many guests are affected by the restriction.

Unified Fire spokesperson Eric Holmes had this to say when he spoke to ksl.com:

“These kind of things can happen and this is a really good example of what can happen, even close to in bounds resorts.”

Little Cottonwood Canyon is closed and is expected to remain closed through Friday morning. For updates on road closures to UPD Canyon Alerts Twitter:
