After what was an unseasonably warm summer for European ski resorts and glaciers, early winter(ish) storms have blown into the alps and left snow on the high peaks from Saas Fee all the way to Solden in Austria’s Tirol province.
So far, Saas Fee is the breadwinner of the group with 30cm of new snow falling on the glacier this past week. So far, Saas Fee is running lifts and is the first northern hemisphere resort to report lift accessed powder turns in Septemeber!
Passo Stelvio, Zermatt, Hintertux, and Molltal are all currently open for skiing and riding.
That said, we have a darkhorse coming out of hiding and opening lifts this weekend.
After snow fell on Solden this past week, the Austrian ski area is now set to open this Saturday, September 12th. That date is several weeks ahead of schedule and bodes extremely well for glaciers that were thawed by scorching summer temperatures. Soon enough other Austrian resorts Pitztal and Dachstein will be running their lifts. Once that happens, over a dozen European ski areas will steadily open their slopes by mid October.
