Nikolai Schirmer's 2026/2027 Gear.

Professional Norwegian skier Nikolai Schirmer shared a look at the equipment he plans to use during the 2026/2027 season, covering everything from touring backpacks and skis to technical outerwear and emergency gear. His annual gear breakdown shows off new products he’s tested while offering advice for skiers considering upgrades before winter arrives.

The goal is not to convince everyone to buy new equipment every season. If your skis, boots, and backpack still work well, we agree with Nikolai when he recommends continuing to use them until they need replacing.

Backpacks Built for Backcountry Skiing

One of Schirmer’s biggest changes this season is his partnership with Raid, a brand focused on backcountry skiing equipment. He highlights the company’s LF40 backpack, which balances lightweight construction with practical features, including easily accessible shovel and probe compartments, wet storage for ski skins, and multiple ways to carry skis.

The lineup also includes smaller packs for day tours and a larger 55-liter model that expands for extended expeditions. Schirmer emphasizes that ultralight designs can save weight but often sacrifice durability and storage features.

Skis, Boots and Outerwear

For skis, Schirmer discusses the Black Crows Atris as a versatile option and the Navis Freebird, which has a 104-millimeter waist, for touring. His boot choices include the Scarpa Quattro Pro for demanding skiing and the lighter F1 RS for longer days spent climbing.

Outerwear is another major focus. Schirmer favors hybrid bibs that combine breathable softshell material around the thighs with more protective hardshell fabric in exposed areas. He says this design offers flexibility and ventilation during uphill travel, although it is less suited to very wet conditions.

Planning for the Unexpected

Schirmer also highlights compact emergency down mittens that can help keep hands warm if a backcountry trip goes wrong. His broader message is that good equipment should serve a purpose, whether that means improving comfort, reducing weight, or making essential safety tools easier to access.
