Austria’s Pitztal Glacier Ski Resort is defending excavator work on the shrinking Mittelbergferner Glacier after footage drew criticism from conservation groups. The operator says it is maintaining an existing emergency route, not building new ski terrain.
According to ORF Tirol, an excavator has been visible since Oct. 19 working at the lower end of the glacier. Images from the Braunschweiger Hütte webcam circulated online, and complaints reached regional environmental officials and the Imst district authority.
Why an Excavator Is Working on the Glacier
The resort told ORF that glacier retreat has made the maintenance essential to keep the emergency route usable. Tyrolean officials said the work reconnects the route across the ice with the adjoining ice-free ground.
Authorities said no separate nature-conservation permit is required for the work. Glacier ski areas must submit three-year maintenance plans for approval, and officials said Pitztal follows that process. ORF reported that the operator did not provide a requested map of the emergency route.
Conservation Groups Want Stronger Glacier Protections
The Austrian Alpine Club shared the footage while acknowledging that the current work has official approval. In its accompanying caption, the organization said the images demonstrate the enormous effort required to keep skiing on a melting glacier and called for the resort to abandon expansion plans toward Linker Fernerkogel.
WWF Austria called for tighter glacier protections in an Oct. 21 statement, arguing that the exemption from a separate conservation permit exposes weaknesses in existing safeguards. The organization warned of a cycle in which glacier retreat leads to infrastructure adjustments and additional disturbance of the surrounding landscape.
“The glaciers are melting, the construction sites are growing,” WWF Tyrol’s Maximilian Frey said, translated from German. The organization wants limits on ski-area expansion and permanent protection for the undeveloped terrain around Linker Fernerkogel.
Operator Says Separate Expansion Has Been Dropped
In an updated Oct. 21 report by Der Standard, the operator said the Linker Fernerkogel expansion project had been discontinued and was no longer being pursued.
Glaciologist Andrea Fischer also told the newspaper that climate-driven ice loss is far greater than the amount removed for ski-area work. Conservation groups, meanwhile, are challenging the additional disturbance associated with maintaining glacier skiing and seeking protection for areas that remain undeveloped.
