Mt. Rose Ski Tahoe has begun making snow for the 2026-27 season as colder temperatures and the first snowfall arrive at the Nevada resort. Crews plan to run the snowmaking system whenever conditions allow, beginning the work of building a base for opening day. Mt. Rose Ski Tahoe
“The first snowfall has arrived, temperatures are dropping, and our snowmaking team is already getting after it. Starting today, we’ll make snow whenever conditions allow as we build toward a quality opening day and the start of the 2026/27 season.”
Mt. Rose credits its elevation with giving its snowmaking team an early-season advantage. Located between Reno and Incline Village, the resort has Lake Tahoe’s highest base elevation at 8,260 feet, with its summit reaching 9,700 feet. Snowmaking will continue as weather permits.
Nearly $2 Million In Improvements For The Upcoming Season
The snowmaking push follows nearly $2 million in infrastructure and facilities improvements outlined in Mt. Rose’s season preview through Ski California. Those projects include replacement of the snowmaking system’s main line and the addition of a new PistenBully grooming machine to prepare the slopes.
Returning visitors will also find changes to the lifts and Main Lodge. A summer retrofit of The Chuter means all of the resort’s lifts now have restraint bars, while a redesigned lodge lobby relocates Guest Services and season pass sales to improve traffic flow. New rental equipment options and an updated online purchasing system are also part of the winter preparations.
At the Wildslide Snow Tubing Park, a new enclosure over the tubing lift will provide protection from the weather. Expanded lodge services will include food, beverages, indoor seating, ticket sales and retail. The tubing park is targeting a Thanksgiving 2026 opening, separate from the ski area’s opening, and advertises up to 20 tubing lanes.
Mt. Rose is also preparing for a larger project beyond this winter. Preliminary site work began over the summer for an $11 million mountain operations facility, with construction planned for 2027.
Other Tahoe Resorts Are Preparing For Winter
Mt. Rose is not the only Tahoe resort investing in snowmaking ahead of the season. Palisades Tahoe has expanded snowmaking capabilities along Mountain Run, one of the main routes connecting its upper mountain to the base area. The resort says the work is intended to support early-season top-to-bottom skiing and help maintain coverage later into spring.
Several Tahoe resorts have already posted their planned opening dates. Heavenly and Northstar are targeting Nov. 20, while Kirkwood is aiming for Dec. 4. Palisades Tahoe plans to open Nov. 25, with opening-day lifts and terrain dependent on weather and snow conditions. Those dates remain targets rather than guarantees.
For now, Mt. Rose’s latest snowmaking update does not identify opening-day lifts or trails. Skiers and snowboarders can follow the preseason progress through the resort’s mountain webcams, including views of the Main Lodge base area, summit and Slide Bowl.
