There are plenty of ways to spend money when it comes to buying ski gear. But beyond the basics, which purchases actually make a noticeable difference on the mountain? We asked Unofficial Networks Facebook followers what ski gear purchase was worth every penny, and one rather unsurprising answer appeared again and again. For many skiers, the right pair of boots was the purchase that changed everything.
Properly Fitted Ski Boots Stand Out
Boots dominated the responses, with skiers repeatedly pointing to custom fitting, molded footbeds and aftermarket liners as investments that dramatically improved their time on the mountain.
One commenter called heat molded boots with custom footbeds a “game changer,” while another simply said that “if your feet aren’t happy it’s hard to have a good day.” Others specifically mentioned custom fitted Lange boots, Fischer vacuum boots, custom insoles and custom boot liners.
ZipFit liners were another frequent response. Several skiers singled out the liners as purchases they would make again, while others mentioned Intuition liners, Superfeet, and custom molded footbeds.
One skier said that getting ski boots fitted by someone who actually knew what they were doing was worth the money, while another argued that if the boots are not right, nothing else matters.
Heated Gear Is A Popular Upgrade
Cold feet and hands were another major theme in the responses. Heated ski boots, heated socks, heated mittens and boot heaters all received praise. One skier recalled using heated Lange boots while teaching at Sugarbush and described being able to turn the heat on during a chairlift ride and have warm feet by the time the lift unloaded.
Other commenters highlighted Hotronic heat socks, Lenz heated socks, heated gloves, and Therm-ic boot heaters. A lot of these purchases seem to be less about luxury and more about extending comfortable time on the mountain.
Goggles, Skis And Other Gear Get Their Due
Good goggles also received plenty of support. Several skiers specifically mentioned lenses that perform well in flat light, with one commenter noting that high quality goggles can make a major difference when visibility deteriorates.
Skis were another common answer. Stöckli, Rossignol, Volkl, Fischer, K2 and other brands appeared among the responses, along with custom skis and used equipment bought at significant discounts.
Helmets, gloves, jackets, bibs and avalanche safety equipment also made the list. One skier said a backpack and avalanche beacon had potentially saved lives, while others pointed to durable clothing that had remained in use for decades. For many skiers, spending money on comfort, fit, warmth, and reliability has delivered the biggest return.
