Maverick Mountain has confirmed that its only chairlift sustained extensive damage in the Sand Creek Fire and will most likely be inoperable for the upcoming ski season.
The Montana ski area shared an update after several difficult days as firefighters and crews continue working to contain the wildfire. Fortunately despite serious damage on the mountain itself, Maverick Mountain owner/operator Erik Borge said all structures in the base area and all snowcats and other equipment have been saved. Sadly the loss of the mountain’s only chairlift means the status of the 2026/2027 season is uncertain.

Maverick Mountain has served as a gathering place for families, local skiers, visitors, and generations of passholders for decades, with a local identity formed through friendships and shared experiences.
Ski Area Plans to Rebuild
The future of the ski area remains unclear, but Borge said that they are already looking at ways to rebuild. The wildfire has certainly changed the look of the mountain, and they plan on embracing the new terrain and new experiences once they’re able to reopen.
No specific plans for the replacement of the damaged chairlift have been announced and there’s no known timeline as of yet. They’re expected to learn and release more information once a detailed assessment of the fire damage is completed. The ski area also said it plans to maintain its commitment to local communities, children, families and passholders.
