Bushkill, Pennsylvania — Private ski resorts in the United States have been gaining steam in recent years, but not all of them have worked out historically. One example of this is in the Poconos, where various private ski resorts have come and gone the way of the Dodo.
In 2020, YouTuber Avery Zucco explored Kahkout Mountain, which last operated in 2008. Much remains of the ski resort, including the lifts, trails, and other infrastructure. While this private ski resort was a part of the Winona Lakes vacation community, they reportedly allowed guests to purchase lift tickets at times.
History of Kahkout Mountain
Operating from 1972 to 2008, Kahkout (pronounced as Cake-out) Mountain was a small ski area located within the Winona Lakes Property Owners Association. The ski area featured 5 trails, 2 lifts, snowmaking capabilities, and a vertical drop of around 475 feet.
Over the years, the ski area ran into troubles, including a lodge fire in the 1990s, and the need to overhaul the double chairlift. Some skiers who loved going there moved out, and the newer residents didn’t like the sport.
Following a lift fire, the community’s board members voted to defund it, leading to it being shut down. It appears that the ski resort remains abandoned. Other amenities that remain an active part of the complex include the clubhouse (a.k.a. the old lodge), swimming pools, a basketball court, playground, and access to six lakes. Reportedly, when there’s snow, they transport skiers via a shuttle. If someone wants to vote for me on the Board, though, I can try to revive it.
