Update 7/22 10:30 p.m.: Good news on the Sandhurst fire, as it’s now 82% contained. The cause has been announced as undermined, meaning that there wasn’t conclusive evidence to figure out how it started. The information below was written this morning.
On Saturday afternoon, a brush fire started in the foothills around Ensign Peak. The hill, which has a peak elevation of 5,417 feet, is located near the Utah State Capitol and, most importantly, the Handle Bar. The cause of the Sandhurst Fire has yet to be confirmed.
According to KSL, 40 homes were evacuated due to the fire’s proximity to some communities. City Creek Canyon and the canyon road were also closed.
Sunday’s update listed the Sandhurst fire as 204 acres and 0% contained. However, due to mellowing winds, firefighters are confident that they have it under control.
Authorities are asking individuals not to use drones around the fire. In addition, they’re reminding people not to shoot fireworks in areas where they are banned.
