British Columbia — Sun Peaks was one of the first major North American ski resorts to invest in snow storage technology. After a successful trial run last year, they’ve doubled down on the practice, among other upgrades.

Last week, Sun Peaks Resort announced what’s new for the 2026-27 season. May want to get your notebook out, because it’s a lot.

SnowSecure

Probably the biggest project is the continued use of the SnowSecure system. The resort first used this snow storage system last offseason. The system preserves 80 to 85% of the snow it covers, letting teams train early in the season. This season, Sun Peaks tripled its tarping system. This will help create an early opening for the Nancy Greene International Race Centre (that’s how they spell center up north).

The water that would have been used for snowmaking will go towards covering the 5 Mile trail, Terrain Park, and Beginner Area.

Trail Enhancements

After introducing two new trails last season, Sun Peaks continues to work on terrain enhancements.

This includes new glades in the Orient zone, an improved ski/snowboard cross-training course on Lower Chute, a new permanent intermediate jump in the Flight School terrain park, and improved drainage on Crystal Lane Trail (improving early-season snowpack).

Snowmaking & Other Improvements

Back in 2024, Sun Peaks began a six-year, C$5.5 million snowmaking project. This year’s improvements focused on adding automated, fixed-mount tower snow guns. The guns’ longer hang time improves snowmaking production.

Other upgrades include moving the P6 parking lot, adding a new electrical substation and backup diesel generator for the Sunburst Lodge, expanding the unload area off the Elevation chairlift, adding new kids’ adventure terrain zones, refreshing trail signage, and adding two new snowcats. Speaking of snowcats, one of their old ones has been converted into a live DJ music stand, while another will now carry passengers for their Alpine Fondue & Evening Ski experience.

So yeah, quiet offseason at Sun Peaks.
