An iconic entrance sign has gone missing from one of Michigan’s most popular wilderness destinations, and park officials are asking the public to help bring it home.

The Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula reported that its entrance sign was stolen sometime between Saturday night, October 3rd, and the early morning hours of Sunday, October 4th. Law enforcement has been notified, and officials are now searching for the missing sign.

A Familiar Landmark For Generations Of Visitors

According to park officials, the sign has become an iconic stopping point where visitors take photographs when arriving at the Porkies. Generations of visitors have memories connected to the sign, making its disappearance particularly frustrating for the park and the people who visit it.

The Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park is Michigan’s largest state park, covering roughly 60,000 acres in the western Upper Peninsula. The park features old-growth forests, waterfalls, rivers, Lake Superior shoreline and more than 90 miles of hiking trails.

The area is also a major destination for outdoor recreation throughout the year. Visitors come to hike, camp, fish, explore the backcountry and enjoy winter activities at the Porcupine Mountains Winter Sports Complex.

Officials Asking For Help

Park officials are asking anyone who may have information about the sign to contact authorities. That includes anyone who may have seen the sign after it was taken or noticed suspicious activity around the park during the timeframe of the theft.

Information can be reported to Porcupine Mountains Park Headquarters at 906-885-5275, extension 0. The Ontonagon County Sheriff’s Department can also be reached at 906-884-4901.
