California — All-weather snowmaking systems are creating new possibilities for ski resorts. In the U.S., ski resorts like Ober Gatlinburg and Ski Ward have extended operations during windows that don’t feel that wintry. In Tahoe, Sky Tavern made headlines for hosting a party on snow this past July. Now, another Tahoe ski resort is using the system to host a pre-season on-snow event.
This week, Sugar Bowl Resort announced that it has installed a new all-weather snowmaking system. The TechnoAlpin SnowFactory can make snow above freezing temperatures, creating the potential for early-season operations. Sugar Bowl will be using it to host an on-snow event late next month. In what they’re calling Tube or Treat, Sugar Bowl will be having snow tubing. Given Tahoe’s very slow start last winter, this machine is a welcome addition.
What Else Is New At Sugar Bowl
Sugar Bowl is seeing various upgrades this offseason. This includes the new Village Gondola, which modernizes how some reach the base of the mountain. Other upgrades include Main Lodge renovations, more work on the Village Lodge, expanding the beginner area, growing the ski beach, and further enhancements to their terrain parks.
This follows various upgrades made during the 2025 offseason, which focused on the Village Lodge. This included a new locker room and an expanded deck.
Overall, Sugar Bowl is spending $100 million on its modernization plan.
