Keystone Resort in Colorado got an early reminder that winter is approaching on Wednesday night when the first snowflakes of the season began falling over the mountain.
The flakes arrived at approximately 8pm on September 16th, marking the first reported snowfall of the 2026-27 winter season at Keystone Resort.
Sadly none of the September snow stuck around into Thursday, but the early flakes are an encouraging sight for those of us already looking ahead to the start of winter. Snow in Colorado’s high country can arrive well before the regular ski season, with September storms occasionally providing the first measurable taste of winter at high elevations.
Keystone’s summer operations are set to wrap up this Sunday, September 20th, though the resort will still offer warm weather activities this upcoming weekend.
Countdown To Ski Season
Keystone is one of Colorado’s major ski resorts and has historically been among the mountains competing for an early start to the North American ski season. The resort opened on October 25th during the 2025-26 season.
For now the September 16th snowfall is more of a visual preview than a sign that skiing is imminent, but every early flake serves as another reminder that the 2026-27 ski season is getting closer. Keystone is set to open as soon as possible, ideally at some point in October.
