Nova Scotia — Cape Smokey is on its way to becoming the premier ski resort in Atlantic Canada. A new gondola, accommodations, and the return of old terrain have been put on the radar. It even held a FIS-sanctioned alpine race last ski season. Improvements continue this offseason, including the beginning of a major terrain expansion and more snowmaking upgrades.
This week, Cape Smokey revealed another offseason project that they’re working on. Snowmaking is a key focus, with two pumps being added to their pump house. This will increase water capacity by 30%, leading to more snowmaking capacity. They’re also adding seven new fan guns.
The Expansion
The news follows the announcement of a multi-year terrain expansion. When complete, the ski resort will have more than 600 acres of skiable terrain, plus a 400-meter vertical drop. The plan also includes three new lifts. The goal is to open some of this terrain this upcoming winter, though it will need natural snow to open.
While this preparation continues, Cape Smokey remains open for summer operations. This includes scenic gondola rides, mini golf, disc golf, hiking trails, and water activities on the adjacent Atlantic Ocean.
