Crested Butte Mountain Resort is preparing to enter its 65th anniversary season with a major investment in avalanche safety and access to some of its most challenging terrain. The Colorado ski resort has announced a new Remote Avalanche Control System project that will allow resort teams to remotely manage avalanche hazards in two areas of the mountain. Installation work is scheduled to begin immediately and will continue over the next several weeks.
New Avalanche Control System Coming to Crested Butte
The remote systems are designed to help mitigate avalanche risk while improving the efficiency of avalanche control operations. The project will be ready for the upcoming winter season and could help the resort open some of its highly sought after expert terrain more efficiently when conditions allow. Crested Butte is known nationally for its steep and technical in bounds terrain, making avalanche mitigation an important part of winter operations.
Temporary Closures During Construction
Those visiting Crested Butte during the installation period should expect temporary closures in portions of the resort. The resort said certain areas will be closed to protect both guests and workers as construction progresses. Additional terrain beyond what’s currently planned could also be temporarily closed during the installation process.
Crested Butte is asking visitors to respect all closures and posted trail signage. The resort plans to provide updates through its social media channels as work continues.
Looking Ahead to Winter
The project comes as Crested Butte prepares to celebrate 65 years of skiing and riding. Resort officials say the investment is part of an effort to honor the mountain’s history while improving its future.
