Austrian mountain biker and stunt athlete Elias Schwärzler just released footage from what he says is the world’s first mountain bike ride across the top of a flying hot air balloon before jumping into a skydive with the bike. The ambitious project required more than two years of planning and development before it finally became a reality.
Schwärzler rode across the crown of a hot air balloon while it floated more than 1,000 meters above the ground before he launched himself and the bike into open air and deployed a parachute for a safe landing.
Years of Planning Made the Attempt Possible
Elias explained that the challenge extended well beyond just the stunt itself. Organizing the project required identifying a country where the attempt could be conducted legally while also engineering a custom parachute system for the bicycle. Every aspect of the jump was carefully planned with safety as a primary consideration.
The balloon platform presented an unusual riding surface with little room for error, adn maintaining control on top of the moving aircraft while suspended high above the ground added another level of difficulty before leaping off the side of the craft.
Building on a Career of Extreme Bike Projects
Schwärzler is no stranger to pushing the limits on two wheels. In 2022 he earned a Guinness World Record by reaching 272 kilometers per hour (~169 mph) on a standard bicycle. At 26 years old, the Austrian rider has built quite the reputation for blending biking with high risk adventures that attract millions of online viewers.
