A new video from YouTuber Curiosity Dude took a look at nine mountains around the world that are almost entirely unseen and unexplored by people, despite the fact that they’re all fully mapped and documented from above.
The video counts down mountains ranging from a nuclear test site in the Russian Arctic to a hidden rainforest sealed above cliffs in Mozambique to a volcano buried under Antarctic ice.
Featured peaks include Mount Kruzenstern on Russia’s Novaya Zemlya, once used for Soviet nuclear testing and only climbed in 2022 with military and naval support, and Mount Leo in Mozambique, where scientists in 2018 rappelled up rock walls to reach an untouched forest and found a previously unknown butterfly species, along with ancient clay pots left by someone whose identity remains a mystery.
Other entries include Ulugh Muztagh in western China, whose accepted height stood unquestioned for 85 years before a 1985 expedition proved it was nearly 2,500 feet shorter than believed, and Cerro El Cono in the Peruvian Amazon, a near perfect volcanic cone rising out of unbroken rainforest.
