A 20-year-old Massachusetts man died on Saturday, June 13th, after suffering a medical emergency on a trail at Monadnock State Park in New Hampshire.

Joshua Luth of Lancaster, Massachusetts, was hiking alone on the Cascade Link Trail when he experienced a medical incident around 4:11pm. Good Samaritans came across Luth and called 911, then began CPR as his condition deteriorated.

Mountain Patrol Rangers at the park notified New Hampshire Fish and Game Conservation Officers, who immediately responded and called in additional assistance from more than a dozen agencies.

Responding organizations included the Jaffrey, Rindge, Peterborough, Dublin, Troy, Keene and New Ipswich fire departments, Massachusetts Lifeflight, Greatbrook Ambulance, Jaffrey Rindge Memorial Ambulance, the Jaffrey Police Department, Southwestern New Hampshire District Fire Mutual Aid, the Cheshire County Sheriff’s Dispatch Office, and the Department of Natural and Cultural Resources.

The trail where Luth collapsed is approximately 0.75 miles from the park’s headquarters on Poole Road.

Despite the efforts of responders and bystanders alike, Luth was pronounced dead at the scene. The cause of his death remains under investigation by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.

Our deepest condolences are with the friends and family of the deceased at this time.
