New Zealand — After a rough 2025 ski season for New Zealand, this upcoming winter is off to a promising start. Like last year, an early fall storm has resulted in large accumulations at upper elevations. Last year, Mt. Hutt tried but failed to open up earlier than usual. This year, early snowfall is allowing one South Island ski field to open very, very early.
On Friday, Hanmer Springs opened up for the 2026 ski season. The ski area received around 20-30cm of fresh snow, with more up top. The Shirtfront rope tow is open, which gives access to intermediate and advanced terrain.
Operations continued on Saturday, which is tomorrow for us, and today for them. Yes, it’s a confusing thing for a writer to explain. While it may seem like just a one-weekend thing, it shows how dedicated the Kiwis are to getting their turns.
About Hanmer Springs
Located on Mt. St. Patrick, the ski area is situated 17 km away from Hanmer Springs. Established in 1957 by the Amuri Ski Club, the group of farmers sought a place to ski. The ski area features 52 hectares (128.5 acres) of skiable terrain with three lifts. There’s 10% beginner, 60% intermediate, and 30% advanced terrain, meaning there’s something for every ability level. A one-day lift ticket costs $90 NZD, which is around $53 USD.
The base area is home to a day lodge, toilets, a ski school, a ticket office, and a ski shop. There’s also overnight lodging. The Robinson Lodge is a hostel-style building for those who want to get first tracks in the morning. There’s also a snow play area for those who are just looking to sightsee.
