Fairbanks, Alaska โ Moose Mountain is a unique ski area. With only one small surface lift for beginners, most access the trails by parking at the base, taking a bus up the mountain, and then shredding the terrain.
Moose’s ski season began on December 6th. Relying on natural snowfall, the ski area has slowly built up its base. The highlight of the weekend was on Sunday, as skiers got to enjoy gliding through 6-7 inches of fresh powder. Temperatures were below zero degrees Fahrenheit, meaning it was a bit brisk out there.
About Moose Mountain
Situated in Fairbanks, Moose Mountain is the largest ski area in Alaska’s interior. The ski area features 750 skiable acres and a 1,300-foot vertical drop. At its base area is a small lodge and a tow lift for beginners. Guests reach the summit by taking a bus. A chairlift has been considered in the past, but with a 2020 price estimate of $3 million, Moose Mountain has decided to keep the bus system in place. This allows them to keep tickets affordable, with a day pass costing only $55.
A key thing to note: it gets cold AF there. You’re going to want to bring some extra layers and hand warmers. However, Moose has an inversion that makes it typically 25 to 30 degrees warmer than in Fairbanks.
Moose is typically open on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays.
