Utah’s Alta Ski Area bid a heartfelt farewell to their longest-tenured avalanche dog, Banjo, after his passing in late October. Hand-selected by Alta employees Jonathan and Elise Morgan when he was just 7-weeks-old, Banjo quickly proved his abilities through tests and training.

Banjo was a hardworking dog, following the commands of both Jonathan and his secondary handler Brett Korpela. He only complained when he was bored, working hard and playing hard as much as possible. Banjo helped clear reported avalanches when needed the most, putting his training to incredible use.

Banjo’s hearing and ability to follow commands faded through age, and he was eventually forced to retire. He never left the mountain, though, settling into an under-the-desk job in the administration offices. Banjo passed on October 24th, 2025, at 15-years-old.
