There are a lot of tips out there to make sure you have a great ski trip, like booking away from holidays or later in the season, finding a place to stay off mountain to save money, and buying lift tickets ahead of time so you don’t pay window price. Those are all vital tips, but there’s a lot that goes into a trip and sometimes it’s the smaller things that make or break a vacation. SRG Skiing offered their 9 tips to ensure you have the best ski vacation possible, and we happen to agree with a lot of them.
9 Tips to Have a Great Ski Vacation
- Limit Your Group Size – Large groups can quickly make a ski vacation a mess as you try to work with everyone’s terrain tastes and skill level. Limit the number of people you travel with or be willing to split up into smaller groups so everyone can head where they want.
- Find The Right Goggles – A pair of foggy goggles are a nightmare on the slopes. Buy a pair of high-quality goggles that fit your face and won’t fog up, and don’t reach for the cheapest pair in the shop as they’re often more prone to fogging up.
- Overpack Certain Items – Bring gear like hand warmers even if the weather looks it will be warm, pack items like small water bottles that might be hard to find in a ski town.
- Wear Your Sunscreen – The sun can be much stronger than you’d expect on the slopes. The worst sun burns I’ve personally ever seen came from skiing, not a beach vacation. You don’t want to spend your entire vacation treating a wicked burn.
- Keep Your Boots Warm – Don’t leave your ski boots in the car or in a garage, as cold ski boots can easily make a morning on the mountains miserable. Bring them inside and keep them warm.
- Scout Dining Locations Ahead Of Time – Check which lodges on the mountain have microwaves and allow bringing in your own food. Packing microwavable ramen cups or something else easily prepared is a huge way to save money while still enjoying a nice hot lunch.
- Have A Plan For Before And After Skiing – Knowing where you need to park, how you’ll be transporting gear, whether you need to take a shuttle or not, how you’re getting to the mountain, where the ticket offices are, and everything else for before and after your day on the slopes can make things move faster with less headaches.
- Pack Day-Trip Accessories (if you aren’t staying slope-side): A tarp can keep you dry while changing shoes in a muddy parking lot, and packing snacks for after your day on the slopes can make the drive home much easier.
- Watch SRG Skiing Insider Guide Videos: SRG Skiing doesn’t have an insider guide on every ski resort in the world, but they have a lot, and they’re plenty in-depth. If they don’t have one, look for other tips and tricks for the specific resort before you head there.
