Mentone, Alabama — After an inspiring comeback last winter, an Alabama ski area has addressed a vital need for successful operations.

Last week, Fans of Cloudmont Ski Resort shared that a few snowguns have been acquired. These older models come from Hatley Pointe, a ski area that has also undergone a recent comeback. The guns may require some maintenance to become operational, but they should increase the ski area’s snowmaking output. Another plan for this offseason is a cosmetic remodel of the exteriors of the ski area’s buildings.

You can support the efforts by purchasing gear at the new Cloudmont online shop.

About Cloudmont

Cloudmont opened back in 1971, but not before tragedy struck the Jones family. While installing the snowmaking system, Jack Jones, Jr. was killed. His family decided to push on and opened the ski area on Lookout Mountain. For decades, it operated with varied schedules due to the milder climate in Alabama. According to AL.com, its longest season was in 1993, when it fittingly operated for 93 days. In recent years, the ski area didn’t operate due to warm winters and family health issues.

For the 2024-25 season, Evan Thibaud of the Friends of Cloudmont Ski Resort’s social media pages reached an agreement with the ownership to assist with operations. His friends came together to run the ski area, which operated for a few weeks in January and February. While this may seem like a short timeframe, it was the first full opening in years.

They plan to continue operations for the 2025-26 season.
