A recent storm brought some serious snowfall across quite a bit of the European Alps over the past 8 days, northwesterly flow and three intense precipitation bouts carrying many mountains on the continent properly into winter. ChamonixSkiBum is there taking advantage of the new snowfall as much as possible.
According to his report, areas in the Alps saw between 10 and 60 inches of snowfall, with some places seeing even more. Areas around 1,500 meters in altitude saw between 10 and 12 inches of snow, while areas closer to 2,000 meters saw around 30 inches of snow. Closer to 2,500 meters saw between 30 and 60 inches of snow, while regions at and above 3,000 meters saw more than 60 inches of accumulation where they weren’t wind-scoured.
That’s some serious snowfall for this early in the year, though regions further south saw a bit less snow (but still quite a decent amount). Strong winds have blown away most of the snow at higher ridge lines. As lifts weren’t necessarily open in the area, lots of people busted out their touring gear to take advantage of the new snow. Even some people in the United Kingdom managed to take advantage of the snowfall.
