Waitsfield, Vermont — Fundraising is underway on a project that is intended to strengthen the bones of Mad River Glen’s famous pub.
The reason for the fundraiser is that the building is aging. Built in 1960, Stark’s Pub has withstood 65 years of Vermont’s wild weather.
According to Mad River Glen, the issues with the building include “compromised beams, an aging foundation, outdated electrical and plumbing systems, and insufficient insulation.” Water damage from floods and leakage has also impacted the building. The plan is to rebuild the structure, upholding its historic charm while also providing improved structural support for the building.
Some of the planned upgrades include larger windows, improved acoustics, a new bar setup, a redesigned wait station area, a larger outdoor deck, and the replacement of electrical and plumbing systems. The new structure won’t look much different, but it will have a stronger structural integrity. The goal is to renovate the lodge in 2026.

The projected cost of the project is $2.049 million. If you’d like to help out, you can make a donation here.
Why Mad River Glen Is Fundraising For A Lodge Rebuild
Mad River Glen is a co-op, meaning that individuals can acquire a share (which costs $2,000) to become part-owners. Significant improvements on Stark Mountain are funded through grants secured by The Stark Foundation, a charitable 501(c)(3) organization. This included the new mid-station on the Sunnyside chairlift, which was completed last year. For 2025, the refurbishment of this lodge is the primary fundraising goal of the Stark Foundation.
