The Phoenix Police Department just released disturbing bodycam footage of an October 6th, 2025 rescue of dehydrated hiker and it serves as a stark reminder always be prepared when entering the backcountry and to stick to designated trails.
A 911 call was placed after a bystander passing through South Mountain heard screams emanating from the hills. Officers responded to scene and searched the area while battling triple digit heat. One officer noticed occasional reflections in the distance and then he too heard her screams.
Eventually an officer discovered the hiker lying shoeless in a small shadow beside a tree. She was extremely dehydrated and disoriented but alert enough to tell the officers that she had been stranded for one day. Officers assisted the woman down the mountain, where she was met by Phoenix Firefighters and transported to a hospital for treatment. Police used the incident to emphasize the importance of hiking safely and sticking to designated trails:
“Remember, when you take a hike, do it right and stay on the trails.” -Phoenix Police
