National Park of American Samoa.
National Park of American Samoa.

What is the most remote national park in the United States? You might think it’s something in Alaska, pointing toward the incredibly hard-to-access Gates of the Arctic National Park. Cameron Sabin, however, argues that National Park of American Samoa is the most remote national park. It’s the only U.S. National Park south of the equator, and requires some less-than-reliable flights to access.

Sabin also argues that National Park of American Samoa is the most unique national park in the United States. Because of American Samoa’s local laws, the National Park Service and U.S. government doesn’t actually own the property that makes up the national park. Instead, the NPS is technically leasing the land that makes up the park.
