As summer winds down, Direct Weather’s latest forecast signals an unexpected twist for late August 2025, with a significant cold snap poised to sweep across parts of the U.S. This early taste of fall could bring cooler-than-normal temperatures and even a chance of snow in some high-elevation areas, offering a stark contrast to the typical August heat.

A Fall-Like Cooldown in August

According to Direct Weather, a powerful cold front could push into the eastern U.S. later this month, driven by a ridge of warm air over the Rockies and Plains that forces colder air eastward. If it holds, this pattern, often linked to a positive Pacific-North American (PNA) teleconnection, could bring temperatures 10 to 15 degrees below normal in regions like the Northern Plains, Midwest, Great Lakes, and Northeast. Additionally, Direct Weather projects that the cooldown will start around August 24 and may linger through August 28, potentially affecting the Mid-Atlantic and Southeast by August 29.

Snow in August?

Perhaps the most surprising element of this forecast is the potential for snow in higher-elevation areas. The European weather model suggests a dusting to an inch of snow could fall on mountaintop locations in Montana, Idaho, and Wyoming. While these areas are sparsely populated, the prospect of snow in August is a clear indicator of the expected significant cooling.

Regional Weather Pattern Forecast

Beyond the cold snap, the forecast highlights scattered thunderstorms across the Upper Midwest, Gulf Coast, Southeast, and Great Lakes through mid-August, with activity peaking around August 16th-8th. The Pacific Northwest and Plains may see above-average precipitation, while the East and Gulf Coast could experience near-normal rainfall.

For those in the Northern Plains, Midwest, Great Lakes, and Northeast, prepare for a chilly end to August. Pack a jacket and keep an eye on local forecasts as temperatures drop.
