Smoky Bear busted out toolbox and grabbed his measuring to tape for a PSA video posted yesterday and we are thankful for his friendly reminder about building safe campfires. Believe it or not, Smoky turned 81 just 5 days ago but his zest for spreading the good word about preventing forest fires has never been stronger.
“I’m using the measuring tape this time but you can take 5 or more paces from tents, trees or anything that could catch fire to easily measure a safe distance to build your campfire. That space helps keep the fire where it belongs.” -Smoky Bear
Remember folks, there’s nothing quite like enjoying the great outdoors with a roaring fire, gooey s’mores, and a night sky full of stars but it’s your responsibility to follow proper campfire safety rules because “Only You Can Prevent Wildfires.”

Here’s a quick rundown on campfire safety tips voiced by none other than Harrison Ford:
Smokey Bear’s been around a long time teaching us about fire prevention and campfire safety, reminding us to properly extinguish our campfires by following these steps:
-Never leave your fire unattended.
-Burn fires completely to ash if possible.
-Pour water on the fire to drown embers.
-If you don’t have water, stir in dirt or sand.Scrape hot embers from sticks and logs, and continue until all material is cool.If it’s too hot to touch, it’s too hot to leave.
Remember, Only You can prevent wildfires!
