Community Volunteer Days @ Alta Ski Resort
Community Volunteer Days @ Alta Ski Resort

Ski resorts across the country offer a wide variety of summer activities for guests to enjoy during the offseason like golf, scenic gondola rides and alpine coasters but this would be the first time we have seen gardening as way to keep customers entertained.

Alta Ski Resort is encouraging folks to escape the summer heat and head to the mountains to join the Alta Environmental Center and their nonprofit partners for a season of family-friendly stewardship events and outdoor learning:

“Whether you’re joining an educational hike or taking part in a hands-on restoration project, there’s a way for everyone to connect with — and give back to — the land. Along the way, you’ll learn about responsible recreation on National Forest Service land, watershed protection and what it means to be a steward of Alta’s natural mountain environment.” -Alta

The Alta Environmental Center just picked up this summer’s crop of 11,133 seedlings and over the next few months they will be blanketing the slopes of Alta with these native plants. Everyone is welcome to join Alta and get their hands dirty as a volunteer planting native seedlings and tree saplings, removing invasive species, harvesting and replanting trees (registration required). Community Volunteer Days will be held on the first Wednesday of each month, from July to September.

While we might poke a little fun at this Huck Finn fence painting approach to slope maintenance, its actually brilliant and genuinely something that more resorts should consider in the summer months. Even if you’re not a green thumb, playing in the dirt can be an excellent way to spend the day. Cheers to Alta!

First Wednesday of the month | 2–4pm (Registration required):

  • July 2nd
  • August 6th
  • September 3rd
