Owen Leeper's failed backcountry pond skim.
Owen Leeper's failed backcountry pond skim.

The pond skim is staple of spring skiing, with resorts around the world hosting epic parties surrounding these competitions. Some resorts have unofficial pond skims where people are welcome to send it across a natural lake willy-nilly. Later in the year once most resorts across the country have already closed, some hardcore skiers and snowboarders head into the backcountry to find themselves an all-natural pond skim.

Professional skier Owen Leeper made his way to this stunning backcountry pond skim in the mountains near Silverton, Colorado. He made it across on his first attempt but wasn’t so lucky on his second. It seems likely that the hike out was a rather cold one.

As mentioned, he did make it across without getting soaked on the first attempt, though Colter Hinchliffe wasn’t quite as luck.
