If you’re planning heading through the Vail Pass area on I-70 this summer, be aware that traffic holds will be a frequent sight throughout the next several months.

Driving Vail Pas

From early to mid-June, traffic holds will occur Monday through Thursday between 9:30am and 2:30pm each day for rock scaling activities. Between mid-June and early September, traffic holds will occur one or two days a week to allow helicopters to lift avalanche mitigation materials into place.

Traffic holds will last about 20 minutes in both directions but the delays could be longer as queues are cleared. The trail users on the Vial Pass Recreation Path could be held just like traffic on I-70 during the rock scaling and helicopter activity, though the path will remain open throughout this summer.

Work on the I-70 West Vail Pass Auxiliary Lane project will continue until November before pausing for the winter. The construction is set to improve both safety and operations in both directions of I-70 on West Vail Pass.
