Colorado’s 14ers are often hugely popular hikes during the summer. Everyone wants to make their way above 14,000 feet and you’re unlikely to be alone on these mountains. Things look a little different when it comes to the winter though. You aren’t guaranteed the mountain to yourself when there’s snow on the ground, especially with the growth of backcountry skiing, but you’re likely not going to be part of a massive crowd.
So you’d assume that if the mountains are near empty, the risk of collisions with another on skis is very low. Somehow though, despite being one of very few people riding down the northeast face of Colorado’s Quandary Peak in this specific moment, Austin Becker managed to collide with his buddy on the slope.
Quandary Peak stretches up to 14,272 feet. The route to the summit typically runs about 6.75 miles in the summer and requires about 3,450 total feet of elevation gain.
