Vintage pond skim.
Vintage pond skim.

Pond skimming is a classic end-of-season activity with resorts across the world hosting their own versions of the event. There are freestyle pond skim competitions, pond skim races, unofficial pond skims, and plenty more.

You might not realize just how classic the pond skim really is. With everyone carrying high-quality cameras in their pockets it’s easy to find clip after clip of modern events, but vintage footage isn’t all that common. Fortunately Warren Miller Entertainment‘s “The Big Ski Show” from 1965 has got us covered.

It’s not hard to believe the pond skim would exist as long as alpine skiing existed. If you have skis on your feet and see a pond below, it would be pretty tempting to try crossing the water even if you’ve never seen someone do it before.
