Weekend warrior mission to ski Mexico's highest mountain.
Weekend warrior mission to ski Mexico's highest mountain.

When you think of a weekend trip to Mexico you might conjure up thoughts of sipping Conornas on a beautiful beach or taking in a wrestling match at the Arena México, also known as the cathedral of lucha libre, but whatever adventure comes to mind you’re probably not thinking of bringing along your skis.

Cheers to Karl Thompson, Joey Schusler, and Thomas Woodson who set out from Denver after work on a Friday for an epic mission to ski Mexico’s tallest peak with the plan to be back at their desks come Monday morning. Aside for the obvious travel challenges, summiting Pico de Orizaba is no small feat. Standing at 18,491 feet, it is not only the highest mountain in Mexico but also the third highest peak in North America. While they only had to hike up the final 4,000 feet, the altitude is severe and this crew did not have supplemental oxygen.

The trio dubbed this mission “A Tribute To The Weekend Warrior” and it is a fitting homage to everyone who clocks out on Friday and makes a beeline to the mountains to live it up before the morning bell on Monday.

“For those with 9 to 5 office jobs, the weekend is a source of freedom and balance. How adventurous can one get in a single weekend and 55 hours away from home? We headed to Mexico with our favorite working stiff Karl Thompson to explore the limits of the weekend warrior.”
