A skier wipes out hard after sending the icefall in Tuckerman Ravine.

Tuckerman Ravine is legendary as an East Coast backcountry skiing destination, but its fame should not be confused with ease. The backcountry skiing area requires a pretty hardy hike to the top, and falls while skiing can be extremely dangerous or straight up deadly.

But people still hike and ski or snowboard the run in swarms, sometimes taking the safest routes, sometimes, like with this guy, sending some unbelievable hucks.

He was looking so good at first, but you can see him start to rotate backwards as he’s flying through the air. It seems unlikely that anyone could have skied out of that backslap.

The difference in the crowd’s tone, from amped to horrified, back to amped, is very funny to watch. It is important to keep in mind that people have died in Tuckerman Ravine, so make sure you’re prepared for the terrain difficulty before making the trip.
