A temporary trail closure will begin in Big Cypress National Preserve this week to keep visitors safe during prescribed burn activity set to begin on Wednesday, January 8. All areas and trails within the treatment perimeter will be closed, while trails on the perimeter of the unit will stay open.

All recreational use, including hiking, camping, hunting, off-road vehicles, and commercial activities will not be allowed in the closed areas. The closed areas include all areas within the permeter of the unit, TRU 63, TRU 26, TRU 29, TRU 43, TRU 36, TRU 41, TRU 42, TRU 46, TRU 44, TRU 23, TRU 24, TRU 26, parts of the Buckskin, Boot Hill West, portions of Mud Lake, and a portion of the FL National Scenic Trail. The ignition operations are expected to run for 3-5 days, with the area usually becoming safe for reentry 2-4 days after the ignitions are complete. Closures will be lifted based on the determinations of Big Cypress Fire and Aviation.

The public will be advised of the implementation and subsequent termination of this closure by web alert, and by the posting of signs in the appropriate areas. If a longer closure is required, due to additional fire activity, an additional press release will be issued immediately.
